The Aim

The Multi-Engine / Instrument Rating (IR) Course at ALT Academy Flight Training is designed for pilots who have not yet gained experience on multi-engine aircraft. This programme provides the necessary training to achieve an Instrument Rating on a multi-engine aeroplane. Upon completion, the holder of this rating is authorised to act as Pilot-in-Command (PIC) of an aircraft under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) within controlled airspace. The course equips candidates with the advanced skills needed to operate safely and confidently in instrument meteorological conditions, while also preparing them for the professional standards expected in commercial aviation.

Entry Requirements

To enrol in the Instrument Rating (IR) Course at ALT Academy Flight Training,
candidates must meet the entry requirements as laid down by the South African Civil Aviation Authority (SACAA), in line with ICAO Annex 1 standards.

The prerequisites include:

  • Holding a valid Private Pilot Licence (PPL) or Commercial Pilot Licence (CPL) issued in accordance with SACAA regulations and compliant with ICAO Annex 1.
  • A valid Night Rating.
  • A minimum of 70 hours as Pilot-in-Command (PIC).
  • At least 50 hours of PIC cross-country flight time.
  • Successful completion of a course of theoretical instruction as specified in the Flight Crew Licensing (FCL) regulations.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in the English language, meeting the standards set out in the FCL regulations.

These requirements ensure that candidates have the necessary flight experience, theoretical knowledge, and language proficiency to undertake the training and safely operate under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR).

Course Description

The Multi-Engine & Instrument Rating Course at ALT Academy Flight Training provides the essential skills to operate safely under Instrument Flight Rules (IFR) in a multi-engine environment. Training begins with general handling to achieve proficiency, followed by asymmetric flight exercises to prepare candidates for handling engine failures. Students then prepare for the SACAA Multi-Engine Skills Test. The Instrument Rating phase starts in the simulator, focusing on accurate instrument flying, radio navigation (VOR/NDB), precision
and non-precision approaches, go-arounds, standard instrument departures, en-route navigation, and arrivals. Simulator sessions are also used for remedial work and extended training scenarios. Skills are later transferred to the aircraft for complete IFR route training. The course concludes with a formal skills test
rehearsal and the official SACAA Instrument Rating Test (IRT).

Training Requirements

  • 6 hours minimum dual instruction (multi-engine)
  • 30 hours minimum dual instruction in a simulator
  • 15 hours minimum dual instruction (multi-engine IFR)
  • Reductions in simulator hours may apply if a CPL (ICAO-compliant) or previous IFR training is held
